Service
- A space for graduate students to discuss their research away from inquisitive (but often well-meaning!) experts was something important I wanted to bring to the CSU Mathematics Department, so I founded SPLINTER (Seminar Promoting Learning in Theoretical Esoteric Research), which is modeled after CSU, CU, and UW's own FRAGMENT seminar. This seminar is for graduate students to give talks on algebra, geometry, number theory, topology, or combinatorics. I organized the seminar for the first few semesters and am happy to report SPLINTER has become a regular fixture among the graduate students and has successfully run every semester since Fall 2016.
- I founded and served as president of CSU's first American Mathematical Society Graduate Student Chapter. During this time, I helped organize events such as a closed-door session on advising for first-year graduate students.
- From 2018-202, I served as a mentor to first-year graduate students in the CSU Mathematics Department. My duties involved observing first-year graduate students teaching, giving feedback on their teaching, and answering any questions they might have about teaching and the graduate program at CSU.
Outreach
- While I was extraordinarily privileged to have a grandparent with a PhD in a STEM field and have parents who are educators, most students, especially those that are under-served, rarely have such a privilege. My family served as a role models in education who encouraged me to pursue science, and in light of this, I wanted to return to the favor! One of the outreach activities I have enjoyed the most is CSU's Math, Science, and Technology Day (or MST Day) put on by El Centro (CSU's Latino cultural center). MST Day consists of several activities put on by various departments at CSU and serves fourth graders from the most under-privileged schools in Fort Collins. Fellow [former] mathematics graduate student Catalina Camacho and I have organized an activity for several years that taught students Mayan arithmetic. It's been a ton of fun of working with these kids!
